Ondrej Smeykal – One-Man Orchestra & Didgeridoo Phenomenon

Our good friend Chad Butler, who is the area’s authority on indigeous music, brought us an incredible opportunity…Worldwide didgeridoo Sensation ONDREJ SMEYKAL was willing to play Clockworks on August 12th.

Don’t worry, I had not heard of him either.  But this Czech Republic performer travels the world and plays the Didjeridoo (and accompanying instruments) in a way like you’ve never heard before.  It’s a Cultural phenomenon.  Here’s what his website says:

For well over a decade and with ever increasing intensity, Ondrej has been developing and redefining his own unique approach to the Didgeridoo. His predominant use of unusually long Didges and “extensions” of up to 4 metres in length, enable him to play incredibly deep tones and to produce a much wider range of sounds and overtones than are possible on regular didgeridoos. Each composition, or song, as he refers to it, is very different in style, ranging from break-beat and organic Didgeridoo techno, to trance, ambient and anywhere in between.”

Another fan wrote this:

“His highly original style of play is the result of a life completely devoted to his instrument. For well over a decade and with ever increasing intensity, Ondrej has been developing and redefining his own unique approach to the didgeridoo.  Each of his compositions, or songs, as he refers to them, are very different in style, ranging from break-beat and organic didgeridoo techno, to trance, ambient and anywhere in between. Ondrej is capable of producing several layers of sound without the use of electronics. Ondrej goes into deep meditation, bringing his audience with him, delivering slow, quiet invocations that blossom to fast and complex dance tracks which fully exhibit his mastery. Watching him is to understand what a focused dedication can unlock within human potential.”

Tickets to the show are $10, pre-sold (at the cafe as well as brownpapertickets.com)  but also available at the door.  We are proud to host him at Clockworks, and I’m personally very excited to be introduced to a brave, and unique new talent.

Wednesday Open Mics

It all started as an event put on as a part of First Wednesday.  The turn-out and excitement was so great that we decided: let’s do it again!! Ever since then, Clockworks has been putting on a mid-week Open Mic/Open Stage right in the heart of Downtown Salem every Wednesday night, from 6pm to 10:30(ish)pm.  It is hosted by the irreverent Elvicious Cash.  It’s open for performers of all kinds…music and poetry, of course, but also ANYTHING else you can think of that can take place on a stage (ok….legally in an all-ages venue).   We’ve seen an amazing blend of performers…with some of Salem’s finest musicians and poets mixing with new amateurs and students, coming together in a cultural “stone soup” of talent and creativity.  It’s a LOT of fun.

It’s your stage, what will you do?

Here are a few photos from our past Open Mics

Danielle Ate The Sandwich – Mon. Aug 9

Performing Live @ Clockworks:

Our good friend Danielle Anderson (who performs under the name Danielle Ate The Sandwich) visited Salem last year for a performance at The Space to an excited and happy crowd.   Danielle returns, now to an all-ages free show at Clockworks!

She is visiting the Northwest for her second tour, and we’re so excited to have her in Salem again.  Her brand of sincere, yet quirky, folk music performed largely on ukelele (and sometimes guitar) will charm you out of your feathered headdress.

Local traditional folksters foxynightgame (a veritable force in their own right) open the show.

The whole thing unfolds at 7pm on MONDAY August 9th!!
